Opals Strike Gold at Asia Cup — Townsville Fire Quartet Shine in Historic Victory

The Australian Opals have claimed their first-ever FIBA Women’s Asia Cup gold medal, defeating reigning champions Japan 94–81 in a thrilling final in Shenzhen — and four Townsville Fire stars played key roles in the historic victory.

Alex Fowler, Courtney Woods, Abbey Ellis, and Miela Sowah all featured in Australia’s gold-medal campaign, helping the Opals end a six-tournament title drought and stake their claim as one of the world’s premier basketball nations ahead of the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup.

Fowler Dominates on the Biggest Stage

The breakout star of the tournament was Alex Fowler, who capped off a phenomenal Asia Cup by being named:

  • Tournament MVP,

  • Final MVP, and

  • Member of the All-Star Five.

Fowler averaged 11 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, but it was her relentless work rate, rebounding dominance, and poise under pressure that stood out. In the gold medal match, Fowler delivered a commanding all-round performance, anchoring the Opals in both offence and defence.

Her MVP honours mark the rise for the Fire forward, who has firmly established herself as one of the premier young talents in international basketball.

Woods Delivers on Debut

Townsville Fire captain Courtney Woods made her Opals debut at the tournament and quickly established herself as a versatile contributor. Known for her scoring ability in the WNBL, Woods showed poise and creativity as a facilitator, averaging 4.3 assists and playing key minutes off the bench. Her strong performance throughout the tournament showcased her readiness for international basketball.

Sowah’s Stunning Opener

One of the standout stories of the tournament was Miela Sowah’s sensational debut. In the opening group stage match against the Philippines, Sowah poured in 19 points in just 18 minutes, shooting with confidence and composure well beyond her years. Her explosive scoring off the bench caught global attention and added vital depth to the Opals rotation.

Ellis Brings Energy and Edge

Guard Abbey Ellis provided spark and defensive grit in limited minutes, making an impact with her energy and hustle. Her ability to pressure opposing guards and push the pace reflected the intensity and selflessness that define Australia’s trademark style of play.

A Townsville Triumph

The contribution of four Townsville Fire players to this landmark win is a proud moment for the club and the broader North Queensland community.

“This is an incredible achievement for the Opals, and we’re especially proud of our Fire athletes who have played such a key role,” said Fire CEO Sam Pascoe. “To have four representatives on a gold-medal winning team is historic — we look forward to them retuning home soon and getting ready to light it up at the Fire Pit.
